The cellphone batteries we're focusing on today are Nickel Metal Hydride
(NiMH) batteries. These batteries were basically designed as an improvement
over the old NiCad cellphone batteries. One big advantage was the
virtual absence of the dreaded memory effect, which we defined in
the previous article. Another big improvement is the lack of the toxic
Cadmium used in the NiCad cellular phone batteries.
Also, the NiMH
batteries can be charged a good bit quicker than the NiCad cellphone
batteries. You can quick charge them for usage, whereas the NiCad
cellular phone batteries would ideally need a much longer charge before
usage. And finally, your NiMH battereis will last you probably twice
as long as the NiCads.
